Mermaid means “Virgin of the Sea.” She was an image of the fish-tailed Aphrodite, the medieval, Maerin, Mari, and Marina. The Virgin
Mary incorporated much of the iconography of Aphrodite and Mariamne the Semitic God-Mother and Queen of Heaven. An old English
law on the books into the 19th Century claimed for the crown “all mermaids found in British waters.”
